I've lost count of how many times I've been asked this following talks on content creation. I often point out that the digital security plan that I had at VICE was part of the reason I felt empowered all those years ago to make so many explainers for the organisation. I mention it because the only infosec training I ever got at the BBC was "don't tell anyone your password". That's sound advice - but it provides zero coverage or realistic protection for individuals who are being engaged with every day on video platforms by thousands of people.
You feel the absence of a digital security plan when it's too late - when you're going viral for the wrong reasons, hitting an unpleasant side of the algorithm and you might even be facing digital threats like doxxing.
An actual plan - for what happens when the algorithm turns on us, when a video goes further than we meant it to, when our real name and real address end up somewhere they shouldn't - makes the right processes happen faster at the worst possible moment. Most of this plan actually includes information security tips that you should have anyway, regardless of being a content creator - but it goes a step further in accounting for real-life tips and tools I've had to implement to feel happy and healthy posting online the way that I do.
